Overview

The WaterRower Natural is the machine that put water resistance on the home-gym map, and it is as much a piece of furniture as it is exercise equipment. The frame is hand-built from solid ash and finished with Danish oil, so each unit carries its own grain pattern and ages rather than wears out. Resistance comes from a paddle spinning inside a polycarbonate tank of water: the harder you pull, the more the water resists, which means the machine self-regulates to your effort without any damper to adjust. The sensation is fluid and quiet apart from a pleasant swish, and many users find it gentler on the joints than a hard air catch. The S4 monitor up top is basic by modern standards, showing intensity, stroke rate, distance and heart rate, but it covers the essentials and pairs with the companion app. A real advantage for apartments is vertical storage: the rower stands on its end and occupies barely more floor space than a dining chair. Downsides are the steep price, a wooden seat rail some find firm, and a monitor that lacks the depth of a PM5. As a quiet, beautiful, low-impact rower you will actually leave out in a living room, it is hard to beat.
